Whenever an object moves or attempts to move along a surface, there is a force parallel to the surface in the opposite direction to motion or motion attempt.

Static Friction
If an object is pulled with increasing force, the force of static friction f[sub]s[/sub] also increases to exactly balance the applied pulling force.

When the pulling force just exceeds a critical value for the force of static friction, f[sub]s[/sub]MAX, the object begins to move.
