Introduction

[/hr]
Reactants: the chemicals present before the reaction
Products: the chemicals formed by the reaction

ex. CH[sub]4[/sub] + O[sub]2[/sub] → CO[sub]2[/sub] + H[sub]2[/sub]O
Methane and oxygen gas yields carbon dioxide and water

Methane and oxygen are the REACTANTS
Carbon dioxide and water are the PRODUCTS

The equation above is NOT balanced.

Unbalanced:
1 C, 4 H, 2 O | 1 C, 2 H, 3 O

There needs to be the same number of each atom on both sides

CH[sub]4[/sub] + 2O[sub]2[/sub] → CO[sub]2[/sub] + 2H[sub]2[/sub]O

This equation is now balanced

1 C, 4 H, 4 O | 1 C, 4 H, 4 O

Types of Chemical Reactions

[/hr]
A. Composition A + B → AB
    1. two elements → a binary compound
      a. a metal and a nonmetal
      • write the metal first followed by the nonmetal
      • using the charges derived from the periodic table, add subscripts to balance the formula
      • add coefficients to balance the equation
